DAY 5
Sigiriya – Ayrvedic Spice Garden – Kandy – Temple of the Tooth – Botanical Gardens
Leave in the morning for Kandy, Sri Lanka’s Cultural Capital. On the way visit the Spice Garden in Matale. Since ancient trading days, Sri Lanka is world-renowned for its Quality Spices. In the 16th century Ceylon, as it was then known, was discovered by the Portuguese who soon began trading in cinnamon and other spices. The Dutch and British followed, bringing with them their own history and influences, forming a strong Western presence that created a history of food expressed with spices that can be tasted in the dishes today. Spices are an essential element of the cuisine of Sri Lanka and the Ayurvedic tradition and a visit to a garden specializes in the cultivation of these substances and is an excellent way for purposes of new uses of certain ingredients that perhaps they knew well. Find cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom, and black pepper, to name a few. Visitors can buy the products in their natural state or in the form of oils and potions that are used by Ayurvedic medicine.
Proceed to Kandy.
Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy. Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy is the most prominent and sacred Buddhist shrine in Sri Lanka, even in the world. The relic of the tooth is kept in a two-story inner shrine fronted by two large elephant tusks. The relic rests on a solid gold lotus flower, encased in jeweled caskets that sit on a throne. The temple is joined by the Pattiripuwa (Octagon) tower, built in 1803, which was originally a prison but now houses a collection of palm-leaf manuscripts. The king’s palace is also in the temple compound.
ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS
Just outside the Kandy city limits lies this little paradise with thousands of tropical and subtropical plants. Created by the British in the 19th century, the Peradeniya Botanical Garden is still considered one of the most beautiful in Asia.
you can find over 4000 flowers, shrubs, medicinal plants, and trees from all tropical regions of the world. The 60 hectares of gardens, forests, and houses can be explored in countless ways on foot or in oxen-drawn carriages.
In the orchid house, a sea of flowers of over 200 different species will delight every nature lover. In addition, many birds, butterflies, and numerous other animals, such as flying foxes, can be observed.

Scenic Train Ride from Kandy to Ella
The train journey from Kandy to Ella is the most beautiful train ride in Sri Lanka, if not in the world! Meet smiling locals on the train, wave to the running children along the tracks, and eat the spicy snacks sold by vendors who board at each stop. The route takes you through tea plantations, jungles, and mountains. As the journey goes on, you move into the lush green highlands, dotted with tea plantations, beautiful hilltop villages, and waterfalls.
Originally built in 1864 by the colonial British to transport tea from the hills to the capital city, the railway has since become a super affordable way to see the picturesque countryside. Today, the 94-mile train ride is the highlight of any visit to Sri Lanka.
One of many unforgettable things about the scenery is the intensity and variety of the color green. Tea needs a warm climate, altitude, and sloping terrain to grow—a perfect description of the Hill Country—and today the region is virtually one big tea plantation.
