Sri Lanka Ramayana Tour Package Itinerary

DAY 1
Airport – Negombo Chilaw

Arrive at the Bandaranayke International Airport and transfer to your Beach Hotel in Negombo. In the late afternoon visit the MUNNESWARAM TEMPLE in Chilaw. It is believed that Munneswaram predates the Ramayana and a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was located here. Munneswaram means the first temple for Shiva (Munnu + Easwaran). A Shiva Lingam was already here when lord Rama visited the place. Lord Rama after his victorious battle left for Ayodhya with Sita in one of King Ravana’s vimanas. He felt he was being followed by Bramhaasthi dosham (a malevolent black shadow) as he had killed King Ravana who was a Brahmin. When the Vimana was passing over Munneswaram, he felt the vimana vibrating and realized the “Brahmaasthi Dosham” was not following him at this particular point. He stops the vimana at this juncture and asks God Shiva for a remedy. God Shiva blessed Lord Rama and advised installing and praying for four lingams at Manavari, Thiru Koneshwaram, Thiru Ketheshwaram, and Rameshwaram in India, as the only remedy to get rid of the dosham. Visit MANAVARI , Manavari is the first place where Lord Rama installed and prayed the Siva lingam after the end of the war with King Ravana. To this date, this lingam is called Ramalinga Shivan. Rameshwaram is the only other lingam in the world named after Lord Rama.

DAY 2
Negombo – Dolukanda – Sigiriya

After breakfast leave for Sigiriya. On the way visit Dolukanda Sanjeewani Mountain. Dolukanda believed that the mountain is directly linked to the Ramayana Trail. In the Ramayana story, this mountain is declared Dolukada Sanjeewani Mountain. One of the five Sanjeevani drops of parts of Himalaya Mountain was carried to Sri Lanka by Hanuman.
Proceed to Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient capital of Sri Lanka and one of the most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka. This ancient fortress has significant archaeological importance and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Sigiriya is also a place related to the Ramayana. According to the legend, Naguliya Cave in Sigiriya is one of the places where Ravana kept Seetha Devi captive.

DAY 3
Sigiriya – Trincomalee – Sigiriya

In the morning proceed to Trincomalee. Besides its golden sandy beaches, Trincomalee holds a significant role in the religious and cultural history of Sri Lanka as it is home to the historical Thirukoneswaram Temple. Often regarded as Dakshina Kailasam, Koneswaram The temple is said to have been built by Agastya Rishi on the instructions of Lord Shiva who was impressed by King Ravana’s devotion. It is also believed that this was the place where Lord Rama installed the second lingam after Manavari Temple in order to get rid of the Brahmahathya Dosham. This temple is revered as one of the Pancha Iswarams in Sri Lanka. Sits idyllically at the edge of a cliff, it offers some brilliant views of nearby plains and the Indian Ocean.

DAY 4
Sigiriya – Sita Kotuwa – Kandy

After breakfast leave for Kandy. On the way, we stop for a visit to Sita Kotuwa. Situated close to Gurulupotha, Sita Kotuwa is one of the important places to visit as part of our Sri Lanka Ramayana Tour Package. This is the first place where Sita was held captive by King Ravana after kidnapping her. Surrounded by waterfalls and streams, this was the place where the city of Lanakapura stood and Seetha Devi was kept at queen Mandodhari’s palace at Lankapura until she was moved to Ashoka Vatika. Seetha Kotuwa means Seetha’s Fort and got its name because Seetha Devi has stayed here. Once in Kandy you have the option to visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy is the most prominent and sacred Buddhist shrine in Sri Lanka, even in the world. The relic of the tooth is kept in a two-story inner shrine fronted by two large elephant tusks. The relic rests on a solid gold lotus flower, encased in jeweled caskets that sit on a throne. The temple is joined by the Pattiripuwa (Octagon) tower, built in 1803, that was originally a prison but now houses a collection of palm-leaf manuscripts. The king’s palace is also in the temple compound. The temple is wheelchair accessible and buggy car services are also available on request.

DAY 5
Kandy – Ramboda – Seetha Amman Temple – Hakgala Botanical Garden – Seetha Eliya – Ella

In the morning leave for Ramboda. En route visit the Hanuman Temple. According to the ancient stories, Ramboda is an area, where the forces of Rama gathered to fight King Ravana. This temple was built by the Chinmaya mission of Sri Lanka and dedicated to Hanuman. This temple houses for 16 feel height statue of Hanuman. There is a pond called ‘Sita Tear Pond’ nearby, which is said to be formed from Seetha Devi’s tears.
Situated at Ramboda Pass, Ramboda Falls is a mesmerizing waterfall that cascades down from a height of about 109 m. It is one of the highest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and is worth a visit.
Proceed to Nuwara Eliya. Visit the Seetha Amman Temple and Hakgala Botanical Garden. The temple is located in the village of Seetha Eliya (also known as Sita Eliya). This place is believed to be the site where Sita was held captive and where she prayed daily for Rama to come and rescue her. On the rock face across the stream are circular depressions said to be the footprints of Rawana’s elephant. Hakgala Garden is the exotic pleasure garden where king Ravana kept the depressed Sita, insisting that she marry him. It was here where the heart-warming meeting took place between her and Hanuman, who brought her Rama’s ring with the news that Rama was looking for her. He offered to carry her back but she refused to say it would be an insult to Rama’s honor if he did so. Part of this majestic garden still exists. It is also said that Hanuman nearly destroyed it in order to prove to Ravana of the forces against him. Later leave for Ella.

DAY 6
Ella – Kataragama

Ella is a small picturesque mountain village and known for the Ravana Falls & Ravana Cave. Falling from a height of about 25 m, Ravana Ella Falls is named after King Ravana, and is believed that Seetha bathed in a pool that accumulated the water falling from this waterfall. There is also a small Ravana Ella Cave near the falls and is believed that this cave was used by King Ravana to hide princess Seetha.
Leave for Kataragama on the South Coast. On arrival visit the Kataragama Temple. Kataragama temple is also known as Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya a temple complex dedicated to Buddhist guardian deity Kataragama Deviyo and Hindu War God Kathirkamam. It is one of the few religious sites in Sri Lanka that is venerated by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and the Vedda people. For most of the past millennia, it was a jungle shrine very difficult to access; today it is accessible by an all-weather road. The shrines and the nearby Kiri Vehera are managed by Buddhists, the shrines dedicated to Teyvavai and Shiva are managed by Hindus, and the mosque by Muslims.

DAY 7
Yala – Ussangoda – Rumansala (Unawatuna) – Colombo

Breakfast at the hotel. Visit Ussangoda. There are several legends related to the area. The site is considered a sacred / forbidden ground for general affairs in local lore. One popular belief is that Ussangoda is the ground of the local demi-god “Mangara“. Other beliefs range from religiously rooted backgrounds to the unwritten/alternate history related to Ravana. According to Hindu Puranas, Ussangoda was one of the landing strips of Ravana’s Pushpaka Vimana.

Next, you will be visiting Rumansala. Rumassala hill and the surrounding area that encompasses Unawatuna are steeped in legends and folklore. According to the Ramayana, Hanuman the monkey warrior god required several medicinal herbs in order to treat the wounded in his army during his battle against King Ravana of Sri Lanka. Unable to find the herbs on the Island, Hanuman returned to India and brought back a piece of the Himalayas with the required plants but accidentally dropped it at Rumassala. Local villagers attribute this as the source of many rare medicinal plants found in the area to this day. Atop the hill, there is a large glistening Buddhist dagoba popularly known as the peace pagoda. At the entrance to the temple, there is a large statue depicting Hanuman. A walk around the peace pagoda provides magnificent views across Galle bay, with the Galle town and Dutch fort visible on the far side. It’s easy to spot sailing yachts out on the water or fishing boats heading out to sea or returning to shore with their day’s catch.

DAY 8
Colombo – Kelaniya Temple – Airport

Among the most important and closest sites to Colombo connected to the Ramayana is the Kelani Raja Maha Viharaya or the Kelaniya Temple. Kelaniya is believed to be the place where Vibhishana was coronated as the king of Lanka by Lakshmana after the death of King Ravana. There are also some beautiful murals depicting the crowning of Vibhishana outside the Buddhist temple. Vibhishana is venerated by Sinhalese Buddhists as a god as they believe him to be one of the main protectors of the island. The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is a sacred place of worship for Buddhists in Sri Lanka and it is one of the three places in the country where Lord Buddha is supposed to have visited.
